چکیده

Using contact measurements, experimental evidence was obtained for the existence of the rolling resistance moment. The critical rolling distance prior to detachment is reported. Previously it has been argued that the critical rolling distance should be related to the lattice size and/or the molecular length of the particle and surface materials. However, there has been no theoretical prediction for the critical value and, currently, the reasons for its existence are not fully understood. For polystyrene latex (PSL) particles, measurements presented in the current study on silicon suggest much higher values for the critical rolling distance than previous anticipated levels. The current approach can also be employed to measure the work of adhesion between a spherical particle and a flat surface without the prior knowledge of the particle diameter since the rolling moment stiffness is directly proportional to the work of adhesion with no dependence on the diameter of the particle. Experimental results are compared with the available data and good agreement between the theoretical predictions and the experimental values is found.

Non-contact microsphere--surface adhesion measurement via acoustic base excitations.

A non-contact adhesion measurement technique based on acoustic base excitation and laser interferometery has been introduced and demonstrated. The vibrational motion of 21.4-microm polystyrene latex particles (PSL) microspheres on surfaces were excited in the frequency range of 0-3.5 MHz, and their axial displacement responses were measured by an interferometer. It is shown that the rolling mot...

Numerical Computation of Rolling Resistance Based on the Result of Tire/Road Static Contact Analysis

Among various dissipating mechanisms, the viscoelastic effect of rubber material on creation of rolling resistance is responsible for 10-33% dissipation of supplied power at the tire/road interaction surface. So, evaluating this kind of loss is very essential in any analysis concerned with improving the fuel consumption of vehicles and resultantly energy savage. Hysteretic loss is a fraction of...

Rolling behavior of a micro-cylinder in adhesional contact

Understanding the rolling behavior of a micro-object is essential to establish the techniques of micro-manipulation and micro-assembly by mechanical means. Using a combined theoretical/computational approach, we studied the critical conditions of rolling resistance of an elastic cylindrical micro-object in adhesional contact with a rigid surface. Closed-form dimensionless expressions for the cr...

Process Improvement of Experimental Measurements Using D-optimal Models

In this paper, the application of D-optimal models, as an alternative to response surface models (RS models) for design of experiment (DOE) was examined. Two D-optimal models for tilt-rotors in the wind tunnel experiment, as a form of quadratic functions, were generated based on a chosen optimality criterion. This optimality criterion was used to generate the optimized sampled points in the des...

Thermal Contact Resistance of Wavy Surfaces (RESEARCH NOTE)

In this paper, the method of determining thermal contact resistance of wavy surfaces is discussed exactly. For determining the thermal contact resistance of real contacts, a new method has been presented. In this method, assuming a regular sinusoidal surface profile, the real contact area in terms of applied forces has been determined. Then thermal contact resistance has been calculated. Testin...
